After That Day, I Became More Certain: Motor Insurance Is About More Than the Premium

Faith reflects on repair estimates, an outstanding car loan and life after a crash—and why motor insurance is about more than price. Total Loss status and the claim outcome await the insurer’s formal decision.

After That Day, I Became More Certain: Motor Insurance Is About More Than the Premium

That day, I was driving as usual. Stopped at a red light. I wasn’t speeding or driving dangerously. I hadn’t done anything wrong. Then a lorry hit me from behind. The impact was hard. My car was pushed forward into the vehicle ahead. When I got out and saw my BMW X1, insurance wasn’t the first thing on my mind. I just stood there, looking at the car that had been with me for years. The rear was badly crushed, the glass was shattered, and both the front and back were damaged.

The car after the accident; number plates and bystanders have been obscured for privacy In that moment, you understand something very clearly: Being careful cannot prevent every accident. The police later confirmed that the lorry driver was responsible. The car was sent to Auto Bavaria for inspection. The repair estimate was about RM190,000. The Agreed Value in my motor policy at the time was RM148,000.

These are the repair estimate and policy details for this accident; they do not mean a claim payment has been approved. As of writing, whether the car is considered a Total Loss and the final claim outcome are still awaiting the insurer’s formal confirmation. When I saw those figures, I suddenly felt grateful. Not simply because a damaged car might be covered. But because, when I bought my motor insurance, I hadn’t thought only about: “Which one is cheaper?” “How much can I save on the premium?” “Does it matter if I insure it for less?” Because when an accident really happens, you realise: The premium is an expense today, but the losses and practical arrangements that follow an accident also deserve careful thought when you buy your cover. Many people naturally ask when buying motor insurance: “Can it be a little cheaper?” There is nothing wrong with that. But I have always felt there is a more important question: “If it really is a Total Loss, will the money I receive be enough to help me get back on my feet?” After this accident, that question felt especially personal. There is still a bank loan on the car. If the insurer ultimately determines that the car is a Total Loss, the claim amount must still be confirmed under the policy terms and through formal approval. An outstanding loan may need to be settled with the bank; how it is settled, and whether any balance is returned to the owner, must be checked against the actual claim outcome and financing arrangements. In other words, when something happens, you are not dealing only with “a damaged car”. There is the loan. Getting around. Buying another car. The family’s cash flow. And arranging life over the next few months. At a time like this, choosing suitable motor insurance is about more than a payment. It is about having choices. A payment made in accordance with the policy terms may help reduce the loss and give us more options. But it does not mean every loan or cash-flow problem will automatically disappear. Whether the payment is enough, when it arrives, and how to manage life while waiting still require careful planning. To me, motor insurance protects more than the car. It is about this: When your car is damaged, you hope your life won’t be knocked off course along with it. I used to remind others to look at the sum insured, Agreed Value and coverage, and to check the applicable terms with the insurer. This time, I experienced it personally as a car owner. It made me even more certain: Insurance is not just about buying the cheapest option. It is also about whether that cover can help when something happens. A car may be with us for five or ten years. An accident takes only seconds. So when you buy motor insurance, I hope you will look carefully at one thing beyond the price: If this car were suddenly gone, would your protection be enough to help you move forward? To me, that is the real meaning of motor insurance.

Article-specific note: RM190,000 is the workshop’s repair estimate for this accident, and RM148,000 is the Agreed Value of the policy as described by me. Neither means the insurer has approved a payment of that amount. Total Loss status, the actual payment, deductions, payment timing, loan settlement and treatment of any balance are subject to the relevant policy terms, financing arrangements and the insurer’s formal decision. Valuation methods, coverage and claim conditions may differ between policies; check the latest policy documents with the relevant insurer.

This article is educational. Actual coverage always depends on the specific policy.
